Boğazkale is a small town with limited things to do, though the hotel is well placed for visiting Hattusa. The garden is cozy, there’s parking and a large shared room for meals, and our host welcomed us with tea. We were there on December 31, and several things made the stay difficult. The bathrooms had no heating and were freezing, with only lukewarm shower water. A heating lamp was used in the room, so there was a red glow all night. We’d agreed on dinner for four, including one vegan, but the portions felt small for the price. The vegan guest got something to eat, though there were very few options and no discount. Breakfast was the same for everyone, and the vegan guest couldn’t eat any of it. At checkout, the host said the card reader was broken and he could only take cash. We didn’t have enough for the stay and dinners, so we had to get cash from an ATM that wasn’t very close.

Aşıkoğlu owns three of the six hotels in the district, and I think they’re the best in Boğazkale. Hittite Houses has an exterior that draws on Safranbolu and Hittite Castle designs, with wide, clean balconies that could appeal to all sorts of people. Mr. Cengiz told me he runs this hotel in winter. If I’m passing through in winter, I’ll definitely visit Aşıkoğlu.

It’s handy for downtown and the local sights, and the staff were friendly. The rooms, though, were very basic, with uncomfortable beds and skimpy linens. There was no hot water, and the rooms were freezing; it took hours for them to warm up. The wall heater made the whole room glow red. Food was mediocre, and the room felt overpriced for what we got.

The village has much better places to stay. This one felt like a tourist trap, with mostly lousy attitudes from the older guys, who cussed us out. The food was terrible and overpriced, breakfast was lousy, and the butter was rancid. WiFi was useless. The tiny bed was worn out, and geese and roosters were noisy very early in the morning. It’s a mile uphill from the village center, which isn’t fun.

The location was incredible, and the room was really comfortable. I loved the blankets, too. Our host was so kind and welcoming, I hope I can stay here again soon!
