My visit was OK, but there were disappointments everywhere. The restaurants, gift shops, bakeries, and even the street bazaar for groceries were extremely expensive, even for someone arriving from the USA with $$$. Bozcaada feels very overrated now, and I’m sure the island was much better before. The castle is in bad shape and the city should look after it better. It was sad to see what seemed like the island’s people damaging it and not taking proper care of it.
A lovely little island. If you enjoy wine, try some of the good quality varieties made locally.
It’s pleasant to wander around with grapes in one hand and lavender ice cream in the other. It does get crowded, though, and all the car traffic makes it less enjoyable.
The cafes and restaurants were overpriced, so I definitely wouldn’t recommend the visit, and I won’t be going back. We arrived on the 10 o’clock ferry, but the town car parks were already full. We drove out to see a few other places on the island, then tried to return around 2 o’clock. There was a barrier down and we were told the town was closed. We drove around looking for another route, but posts and spikes blocked every other way. I felt like a criminal. You couldn’t even get off the island because the ferry port is in the town centre. The castle may be worth seeing, but we never got the chance.
Honestly, it feels like a dream place.
