It was a disaster from start to finish. The day before our reservation, they messaged to say checkout was at 10 am and check-in at 2 pm, and insisted on cash. After a five-hour trip to the pine cone houses up on the mountain, we arrived at 2 pm and they asked, “Was it yours today? There must be a mistake, I’m not home, just a second,” then hung up, as if a customer must always be the one making a mistake. A girl and her mother came out, apologized, said they hadn’t known, and asked for an hour to change the sheets and sweep. The mother asked how many people we were travelling with, as though we’d brought too many, even though I’d already given the number and the children’s ages over the phone. The listing says 2+1 and fully furnished, but the fridge was too small for a 2.5-liter plastic bottle, there were only four glasses, and the oven had no tray. The knife looked like it had been found in a digging hole and couldn’t even cut cheese. The shower head wouldn’t adjust the temperature, so the water was either boiling or cold. The mosquito net was torn and useless, and there were plenty of other problems too. The most disrespectful part came at checkout. We’d packed and were about to leave, and I was waiting for him to return the deposit. He checked the house and didn’t find anything, then stood at the door and started taking off the pillowcases. I asked if we’d still get the deposit. He said, “Of course,” checked a few more places, and then handed it over.
