Hotel Bella

The ivy covered balcony was what won me over, and the hotel manager was easy to talk to. We got along over travel, music and sports, and he recommended a good home cooked restaurant at the foot of the hill. Nearby, Salman runs a little curiosity shop with the fairest prices I found on my trip, and he kindly taught me Tavluk, or backgammon. As a solo traveler, I arrived in Selcuk early in the morning without a booking, based on some bad experiences from past trips. Bella Hotel caught my eye with its distinctive façade and easy access to the castle, train station, square and other places. It sits up a hill, with a wonderful terrace view over the town at night, including warmly lit ruins. The staff let me check in early, and it all went smoothly. I joked to my family and friends back home that the view was “ruined” because there are Byzantine era ruins just across the street. It was actually beautiful. The room was comfortable for the price, and I stayed two nights. The only letdown was breakfast. It was adequate, healthy and filling, but I’m used to buffet breakfasts at this price, even in Istanbul. Maybe that varies by city. Happy travelling!

The staff were wonderful, but keep the stairs in mind if you have physical difficulties. Every room is up one or two flights, and breakfast is served on the third floor.

We barely used our room, which was cramped and had no TV, since we spent most of our time out or on the terrace. That terrace was a great place to sit, relax and have breakfast. The building has a cozy feel, and the owners are around to make sure things are running smoothly. Next door there’s a fine carpet and handicraft shop. Its carpets are certified, the crafts come from well known Turkish artists, and the National Geographic guide lists the shop as a trustworthy place for genuine handmade Turkish carpets. The location worked very well for getting around. It’s near the train station we used for the Izmir airport, and close to the Ephesus Archaeological Museum, Isa Bey Mosque, Ephesus Museum, Temple of Artemis and more. We loved staying here, though the town’s many sights made it hard to spend the whole day at the hotel.

I was really impressed that the staff let us check in early when I arrived in Selcuk very early by night bus. They were very helpful, and the hotel is close to everything. You can visit Ephesus or Basillica of st.john opposite the hotel, or head to the train.
