Ena Serenity Boutique Hotel

That was possibly the worst and least peaceful hotel night of my life. The plumbing was bad too. We'd booked an ordinary double room with a patio. It looked charming, and really was charming when I finally got to see it, but we weren't allowed to stay there. Instead, we were put in a terrible basement room packed with beds like a dormitory, with barely space to move. The plumbing smell seemed to be all over the hotel. Our windows faced walls about six inches away, and there were bins outside the door for a lovely view. The odor was so awful I had to get up in the middle of the night and go to the terrace for air or I thought I would vomit. After a long trip from Greece, we also found there was no hot water that evening, so we barely slept. The owners didn't explain why we weren't getting the room we'd booked. They let us in around 7:30 in the evening, then disappeared. The next day, after our visit to Ephesus had been spoiled by the night, we finally found the owner. He didn't apologize or offer a refund or any of the things a normal hotel might do. Instead, he seemed to suggest it was our fault we got a bad room. It turned out they could easily have given us a room like the one we'd reserved, but chose the basement one without explanation. We're two travelers in our 60s, used to rough places around the world, but we do expect to get what we pay for. This was about as bad as a hotel stay could be. The excellent breakfast is the only reason I give one star rather than none out of ten. Be wary of the supposed discount, where they claim the room is worth over $150 but they're offering it for 50 or something. At best, it was a $50 room to begin with, and ours was worthless. I've reviewed hotels for years and usually try to give them a fair write-up, but the owners' bad faith and the terrible plumbing, which I think could pose a health risk to people staying or eating there, make that impossible. My advice is simple, stay away. There are plenty of better hotels nearby.
