Afei Surf Inn Hall 2 -TIKI HOUSE

The room was clean and well maintained, and the staff who handled cleaning and meals were very kind. Even so, a serious safety issue with the owner and instructor at Afei Surf Shop ruined my year-end trip in Taiwan. We canceled the rest of our plans and left early. As we were leaving, I told a staff member what happened, and they apologized on the owner's behalf. After a morning lesson, I went out for a free surf session that afternoon. I had already noticed the equipment seemed outdated and the leash strap's Velcro didn't hold strongly, but it hadn't caused trouble during the lesson, so I let it go. The strap was double-layered, not triple-layered, as in the reference image mentioned below. In deep water with strong waves, it came loose. I tried to grab it, but it had detached from my ankle and my board was drifting away. I panicked, swallowed a lot of water and was terrified. Thankfully, I can swim and managed to get out. That evening, during the personal feedback session, I told the shop owner about the accident. I said I was really scared and asked him to check all the leash straps for other customers. My girlfriend can't swim, and I said it could have been very dangerous if she'd been using that leash. His response left me speechless and I'm still angry. He said, “This kind of thing can happen. Didn't you review the safety and usage rules? Starting tomorrow, sign the usage agreement before surfing.” He also asked, “And if, as you said, if the same issue happends to your girlfriend tomorrow, what would you do then?” His tone seemed to imply, “Would you hold us accountable?” My girlfriend, who was frustrated too, replied in Chinese: “This is a matter of life and death. You could just simply apologize or just say 'you will check the straps'. What are you talking about right now?” I added in English that I was giving feedback as a customer, that this was something an owner should care about, and that I was sharing it to help prevent similar incidents, especially for Koreans. He kept repeating the same response four or five times. The owner said Afei and the Korean surf company "Surf Only" are “almost the same” company. That morning I'd noticed many Koreans coming to Afei from Surf Only. They used the same boards and took lessons together. I don't want to cause any harm to Surf Only, but I'm leaving this detailed review so people using Surf Only and taking lessons at Afei don't run into the same problem. I booked a hostel room spontaneously for one night, but next time I'd reserve a sea-view hotel room and stay longer. The rooms are beautifully designed, the whole area is clean, and everyone was so friendly it felt like family. Breakfast was delicious and included, and they made it vegetarian when I asked. I also took one surf lesson with Afei, then immediately booked two more. His tips helped me progress quickly and catch waves before long. I can't wait to come back. Thanks again for everything! You can't really say you've been to Kenting without meeting Afei. He's a local surfing legend with amazing energy and kindness, and staying at one of his places is a great way to experience his beach lifestyle.

The rooms were convenient and reasonably priced, and the food was fresh, cooked to order, and not too expensive for a vacation spot. The beach is about a 200-meter walk, with a 7 Eleven around 500 meters away. If you're new there, tell Afei and he'll take care of things, including pickup and drop-off from kaoshuing train station. We came as a group of 25 and they organized us really well, put on lots of events, and kept everyone happy right through our last minute. Afei is an expert surfer and gives lessons. He's a chill guy who goes with the flow, and his famous line is to follow your heart. It's one of the best dorms and hotels in kenting. He's the best. Happy vacation, fellows. Peace.

Afei and his crew bring a great vibe and are local legends. Take a lesson, join a surf trip if you're more experienced, and stay in one of the cool rooms. You can't visit Nanwan/Kenting without hanging out with them. I'll be back to surf and hang out again!
