The beds and pillows on the floor were incredibly hard, while the bed in the room was extremely soft. The front desk was often unattended, and the computer was left unlocked, which made me worry that guests’ information could be viewed by anyone walking up to it. Toiletries were kept outside the bathroom, including the hand soap, and there wasn’t even a spot by the sink to put it. There was a table in the room, but it sat directly under the wall TV and looked like it might be attached, so it was hard to recognize as a table.

I came for three nights and stayed for two weeks. Tree House made a great base for exploring Hualian and Taroko. Ming Hao and his mother Jin Huan were wonderful hosts, and they make some of the best siphon coffee I’ve had. The shared Japanese-style space downstairs was a nice place to use my laptop or watch Taiwanese baseball on the projection screen at night. The neighborhood worked really well for a longer stay. Pine Garden is walkable or three minutes away by scooter, Taroko is about 30 minutes by scooter, and just two blocks away there’s a noodle shop, dessert shop, curry, and French bakery. The rooms and beds were comfortable, with plenty of horizontal space to put things, and some rooms have an ocean view. When you arrive, the driveway is behind 7-11 and the entrance is a little hidden. Look for the small yellow sign.

The host was warm, and our fourth-floor room had a partial sea view. It’s tucked at the end of a quiet lane and reasonably priced. There’s a convenience store about a five-minute walk away.
