KIVALA Hostel

I spent around ten days here over Lunar New Year and really enjoyed the chance to live in a traditional Minnan house. It keeps its old character but has the basic modern comforts. The dorm beds were fine and the blankets very cozy. There's a little kitchen with tea, a fridge, and a microwave. The bathroom is small, with just one toilet, though the house's layout and size make another one seem impractical. It wasn't an issue while I was there since it never filled up. Everything was clean and calm, and checking in and out was easy. The village is quiet, away from traffic and noise. At night and in the morning I heard birds, crickets, roosters, and the occasional dog, which brought back memories of my childhood in the countryside. There are nearby sights like a tunnel, lake, stone inscriptions, an old street, and Shueitou village, plus lots of walks from the house. There isn't anywhere to eat close by, but 7-eleven is about a 20-minute walk. The pace is slow and sometimes feels like stepping back in time. There are plenty of lovely old homes with interesting details and stories if you take time to look. Getting to the city by car is easy, and the bus is doable too, though island public transport can be tricky. The last bus back from the city is around 8pm. That sounds early, but people in Kinmen tend to sleep and wake early. There's plenty of outdoor space near the school and lake, and I spotted a nice café in a nearby house. The manager can help with information, and the relaxed, trust-based feel of the place made it feel like home. I highly recommend it.
