Yunnan Homestay

The boss was warm and friendly, and walked us through everything about the accommodation so we could stay safely and comfortably. We needed an early meal, and the restaurant served us delicious traditional Yunnan dishes. The flavors were superb. The staff went out of their way to help us feel relaxed and comfortable. We had expected a wonderful stay in a treehouse in this mountain paradise, but the service surpassed what we expected. We were really happy to have had the chance to stay. It's a beautiful place.

The rooms were generally clean, though expect plenty of tiny bugs at night and a lot of bites. The food was so-so, nothing special, but I guess it's the only restaurant around the mountaintop that serves big families. Breakfast was free, but the food was very cold when we went.

The views of the countryside, sunrise, and sunset were a real highlight, and made up for the limited TV channels. Our room was spacious enough, with two large beds, and the staff helped get our luggage to the room block. There was no air conditioning, but the night was cool, and they had a standing fan and powerful dehumidifier. The toilet was a good size, though it took some getting used to putting used paper in a pail instead of flushing it. There were also two large stuffed bears on the sofa, which seemed a bit odd. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel. Dinner was rustic but pretty good, with a wide range of dishes in the set. Breakfast was much simpler, mostly congee, fried noodles, and dough sticks. There were other Southeast Asian diners there, too. There were lots of flies, though sticky paper pads around the restaurant caught them. The steep driveway is the way into the grounds, and after dark there wasn't much to do. There were no facilities like vending machines, so staff suggested buying snacks and drinks earlier at the rest stop along the way.

The setting was pleasant, and we had a great meal. We chose the set for four with the so-called ancient fish sturgeon and chicken for $2600NT. The portions were generous, though the price wasn't as cheap as it might sound. We could pick two cooking styles for the fish, so we went with steamed and three-cup style. The fish tasted a bit like cod. Overall, a great experience.
