The trip back to Taichung Station was easy, with a bus stop a little over five minutes away on foot. The ride takes two hours, and I could just rest and enjoy that calm feeling after soaking. I’d gone to Guguan, Taichung’s oldest hot spring area and one of Taiwan’s Top 10 famous hot springs, because a hot spring visit was a must for me on this trip. Huilai Guguan Hot Spring Resort has a lovely old-world feel, surrounded by mountains and layers of greenery. The mountain air was so fresh that I felt relaxed before I even got into the onsen. My private indoor hot spring room was elegant, spacious, and comfortable, with a semi-outdoor bath that felt close to nature while still private. The clear, mild alkaline sodium bicarbonate water left my skin incredibly smooth and soft. I didn’t want to get out. It was one of the most memorable and satisfying parts of my Taichung trip.

Breakfast comes with the room, which is always nice. I booked a standard double occupancy room, and the soaking tub was so large I could stretch out completely, with room for four people. I was mainly after a clean hotel with a big private hot spring tub, and this place fit that. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Bali Nature looked more appealing and professional than the other hot spring hotels I checked, and seemed like good value for a private two-hour bath after trekking the shaoli trail. But the water had algae in it, which really disappointed me. A helper said the mineral water was tasteless and odorless, and that made me feel I was being conned. When I complained about the algae, they responded with apathy and ignored it. Despite the good appearance, I don’t think the hot spring was worth the money. Don’t be drawn in by how it looks, there may be a more affordable nearby place where you can stay longer.

The interior and rooms are beautifully done, with a tasteful design. I really enjoyed the hot mineral bath, and the breakfast buffet was tasty.
