City Hut 1828 Hostel

A big, fully equipped kitchen and living area sits at the heart of the communal space. It’s good for meeting people or just taking it easy. The hostel has a vintage Tainan feel, and it’s about an easy 10-minute walk from Tainan Main Station. Rooms and shared areas were as clean as they could be. A great base for travelers wanting to experience Tainan’s distinct culture and way of life.

The girls’ washroom had sanitary items, which was a really thoughtful touch. We had some great chats with the staff, who pointed us toward local food, and we took their cool bikes for a night ride around the neighborhood. On our two stays at Dorm 1828, we loved the atmosphere. The staff helped us check in and even arranged for an ice man to deliver ice to our door so we could enjoy the night. We’ll definitely come again. ^_^

I might have rated this four stars if the attendant had handled my room and bunk request properly. I’d asked the day before for a bottom bunk on the ground floor, but when I got back in the evening, exhausted from the day’s activities, I was told all the first-floor rooms were booked. I had to drag my suitcase up to the 3rd floor. I thought I’d made the request clearly, and it made for a poor experience. Reception could have done a better job assigning rooms, and I hope management asks staff to pay closer attention to guest requests. I don’t like giving a bad rating, but the stay could have gone better. If you have a special request, ask staff to write it down, or stay until they confirm they’ve handled it.

The staff know what’s happening around Tainan, and the hostel sometimes puts on interesting events. It’s a good budget option if you still want decent quality. Rooms are functional and good value, the shared bathrooms are clean, and there are lounge, kitchen, and courtyard spaces.
