There’s plenty to explore close together on Anping Old Street, so it’s easy to wander without much planning. I liked the contrast between the traditional buildings and the busy shops, and the local snacks make it a place to explore through food as much as by walking. The street is narrow and crowded, especially at peak times, which can feel chaotic, but that energy is part of its character. With its history, street food, and local culture all mixed together, it’s a lively way to experience a more traditional side of Tainan.

The lively buzz is what I loved most about Anping Old Street: vendors calling out, food smells in the air, and people enjoying themselves. It feels authentic, and there are souvenirs and local crafts to browse too. The narrow lanes, traditional architecture, and distinctive shops give the area an old-time feel. There’s plenty of local food to try, including shrimp rolls and peanut ice cream rolls. Whether you go during the day or evening, it’s a fun, memorable place that captures Tainan’s spirit. A must-visit, highly recommended.

The side alleys are a quieter break from the busy main streets. There you can see Minnan homes, detailed “Sword Lions” carved on doors as talismans, and calm, plant-lined passages that retain the neighborhood’s residential feel. Anping Old Street, also known as Yanping Street, was established by the Dutch over 300 years ago. It’s a dense cultural corridor and an important historical site for Taiwan’s early merchant life. The street is also a hub for traditional arts and crafts, including Glove Puppetry (Potehi), which offers a glimpse of storytelling traditions from the Ming-Zheng and Qing dynasties. For food, it’s a place to seek out Shrimp Rolls, Crackers, Candied Fruits, and Dried Sweet Potato.

A fun family outing. Our guide gave us a short history lesson and showed us the temple. The street has cool buildings and artwork.

It’s nice to learn about the history, but the main stretch of old street feels too commercial, with all the street food and vendors.
