Taipei Sunny Hostel

From the upper floors, you can get a striking view of Taipei's Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. The hostel is clean and has the standard amenities. National Taiwan University Hospital MRT station is around 300 meters away through adjacent 228 Park, though at night the park can be hard to navigate if you don't know the area. There aren't clear signs for directions or for the entrances and exits.

Our room was really cramped, the elevator was small, and there were quite a few stairs. You also have to take your shoes off at the entrance. Even so, we loved our stay at Sunny Hostel and would book again if we return to Taiwan. The beds were comfy, the ACU kept the room cold, and the price was affordable. Staff were friendly and accommodating. We could use the kitchen, pay for laundry, and borrow umbrellas for free. There were complimentary snacks and tea in the common area too. The location made it easy to walk to the metro, 711, Family Mart, breakfast places, parks, and a museum.

Having the 2/28 Peace Memorial Park across the street was a real highlight for our family. The kids enjoyed its playground, and nearby the National Taiwan Museum's Land Bank Exhibition Hall had an impressive dinosaur exhibit. We also had a lovely view of the park from our room, which had a comfortable double bunk bed and a clean private bathroom with a refreshing shower. Taipei Sunny Hostel was convenient for exploring the city, with the MRT, supermarkets, restaurants, and coffee shops close by. After a day out, we liked relaxing in the cozy lobby. Water, coffee, tea, and snacks were free, umbrellas were available to borrow, and the Wi-Fi worked throughout the hostel. The staff were welcoming and helpful. We had a memorable trip and would stay here again.

We were in a lower-floor, two-bed bunk room for five nights, and I couldn't get proper rest. The room felt stuffy and musty, with hair on the pillow, stains on the walls and ceiling, dusty window sills, dirty floors, itchy bedding, and towels that smelled used or moldy. I asked for fresh bedding because I couldn't sleep, but reception declined and said they would only replace the towels. I expected them to accommodate the request during a five-night stay. After we moved to a better hotel, I crashed as soon as we arrived. The view didn't match the photos. It seems only the six-bed family room looks out over the park; our lower-floor bunk room faced back buildings with all sorts of things dumped around them. We asked about upgrading to the family room, but were told we'd have to pay its full rate on top of what we'd already paid for the bunk room. They said our room was reserved and couldn't be sold again, which seemed weird. I knew the elevator started on the second floor, but nobody mentioned how tiny it was. It seemed like it could fit only two people. The stairs were very steep and difficult to use. We were out most of the day and mostly came back to bathe and sleep, so I didn't take photos. Maybe the higher floors are better maintained.
