Formosan Naruwan Hotel & Resort Taitung

We liked the paid sauna spa, and when we went around 6 p.m. there was only one other customer. Breakfast had lots of choices, and the large pool area has several pools for families to enjoy. The hotel is a little outside downtown Taitung, though it has a big underground parking garage with multiple levels.

The concierge staff were charming and took care of my bicycle, easily the best part of my stay. I arrived late yesterday after cycling from Taipei and spending several nights in cheap places, hoping for a bit of luxury. The room was fine, but the breakfast wasn’t to my expectations. At about 9:45 this morning I asked reception if I could extend for another night without breakfast. I was told I had to check out and come back at 4 p.m. Packing up, killing time all day, and returning then didn’t sound like a good time, so I tried the duty manager from my room. There was no answer, and I checked out. For a hotel charging over 3,300 a night, I expected better. Maybe some concierge staff could work at the front desk. We stayed inside the hotel for 24 hours after arriving, with water activities and other facilities to keep us busy. The breakfast and afternoon tea were great, and we especially enjoyed the swimming pool. The water was pretty cold on a cloudy day, so it would be better if the pool were heated.

The food is great, both at the onsite restaurants and in the complimentary snacks and drinks in the rooms: sports drinks, bottled water, pineapple roselle cake, rice chips, and rice crisps. The rooms are nice, and the tubs are good for a hot bath. There’s also a huge, clear, beautiful outdoor pool, plus indoor pools with a kids area, massage showers, bubble and spray features, and hot springs. Lots to do, including indoor golf, a driving range, bike rentals, crafts, video games, kids’ play areas, billiards, ping pong, tea tastings, massage chairs, and shopping. I’ve been here several times. It was in its prime 17 years ago, when I’d have called it a 5 star hotel. Over the years, some things have started to look worn, including cracks in the stairs and ground and occasional ceiling leaks, so I took off a star. Apart from those signs of age, it’s a 5 star hotel.
