It felt easy to settle in and enjoy the local community, with the owner readily lending us things like pots, pans, bicycles, and use of the washing machine. The room opens onto a roomy living area with a little bar and a mini-kitchen for simple meals or hot pot. There's also a versatile dining table and wooden chairs that work well for a laptop or tablet. A great setup if you like having your own freedom.

I never actually stayed, so I can't comment on the accommodation itself. The location is remote, and I called a week ahead specifically to make sure my reservation was confirmed. When I arrived a little after 5 pm, nobody was there. I tried calling more than ten times and couldn't get through. After waiting several hours, I gave up and booked another guesthouse. Other reviews seem to describe phone calls going unanswered before, so anyone thinking of booking may want to think twice.

A quiet, comfortable place in Hualien, with some adorable cats. It suits backpackers well, but there aren't any convenience stores nearby, so stock up on food beforehand.

This place is quite remote, so I'd suggest contacting the owner before heading there after booking through Agoda. Calls can go to voicemail. We arrived at 7:30 PM and the owner wasn't home. When we eventually met, he said his family had gone home and no room was ready for us, and offered to refund the booking. We ended up finding somewhere else to stay.
