Shanuo Beach Bungalows

The staff were helpful all around, and the location is right by the beach. I liked that they avoid plastic bottles and provide guests with drinking water for free. The rooms were lovely, and the bathroom was nearly as big as a ballroom. The only downside was a loose wire in the fan outlet, so we couldn’t get it working on the first night.

Shanuo Beach Bungalows sits right by Michamvi-Pingwe beach, with sand just outside the bungalow. At high tide the water reaches the shore; at low tide, natural pools appear. It’s peaceful, with locals nearby and The Rock close at hand. The bungalow was compact but clean, airy, cozy, and had the essentials, plus a veranda opening onto the beach. Some guests felt the rooms were small or breakfast portions limited, and vegetation sometimes partly blocked the sea view. Breakfast on our terrace had a nice range, from savoury food to fruit pancakes, yogurt, muesli, juice, and cake, without the waste of a big buffet. There’s no restaurant on site, but The Wishing Tree is a few steps away, with local and international dishes, and Shanuo guests get a 15% discount. The staff, especially manager Gillian, were exceptional, friendly and efficient with breakfast, excursions, and transfers while staying unobtrusive. The property is modest but has free Wi-Fi, a bar and lounge, bicycle rentals, massage services, airport shuttle arranged through Othman Express Zanzibar, daily housekeeping, turndown service, a private beach area, and free parking. Our trip felt seamless from the Othman Express Zanzibar shuttle onward. Around US $100 a night felt like excellent value for a quiet beachfront stay with attentive service and authentic charm. Couples, solo travelers, or small families looking for a peaceful spot could find a lot to like here.

Manager Julian and the whole staff were exceptional. They made us feel at home and cared for. I’d highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Zanzibar.

The view is breathtaking, and it really felt like paradise. This is my favourite place on the island, a real jewel. The design is thoughtful, the rooms are spotless, comfortable, and carefully laid out. The food was delicious, and the staff were always friendly and attentive. I’ve already told friends about it and will return when I’m back in Zanzibar.
