I can't say anything positive about this hotel. On my first night, someone came into my room and stole my iPhone 16 Pro, $406 in cash, a power bank, the original iPhone cable, earphones, a waist bag (“nerka”), and my suitcase. Inside it were a Philips toothbrush charger, other chargers, sanitary pads, a Victorinox multitool, and a thermos mug. That's all I can remember. There was a hole in the window. I was asleep in bed, so I assume something was sprayed to stop me waking up. Haluk came with me to the police station and gave me 50,000 Tanzanian shillings, about €17. He lent me his phone to call my friends and the embassy, but never told me that messages had come in from them. In reality, he did nothing to help me. I posted about what happened on Google, but that review was later deleted. Haluk didn't refund me for the four nights I couldn't stay because I felt unsafe. He told Booking.com he'd covered $40 of my food and drinks, which wasn't true. He only paid for two beers once, served me vegetable porridge once, which I hadn't asked for, and gave me bottled mineral water once. The tax for five nights was 35 PLN, about $8. Haluk is extremely untrustworthy and opaque in his dealings. I strongly advise against staying here.

This was our second visit to Zanzibar, and we chose Carpe Diem again. Staying at this small hotel lets you experience Africa fully, largely because of its amazing owner, Haluk. He arranged trips and suggested the best meals, and Carpe Diem turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to us. We also asked him to organize a small ceremonial wedding this year. Thanks to him and his wife, Nana, it was even better than we could have imagined. The rooms are clean, and breakfast is delicious. Every morning there's a savory choice and a sweet one, enough to keep you full until the afternoon. It's close to the beach and bars, and also near a quieter, less commercial beach, so it worked well for a peaceful vacation. We highly recommend it to anyone wanting an authentic African experience and the best of Zanzibar.

We especially appreciated the personal suggestions for local attractions and help arranging transport. The on-site restaurant served delicious food, including fresh seafood cooked just right. After a day out exploring Zanzibar, the rooms were a clean, cozy place to return to. Haluk and Nalan welcomed us with such warmth from the moment we arrived that we felt like family. They put a lot of care into making guests feel at home. Carpe Diem Nungwi also gave us a chance to connect with the local community. It's in a charming village, where you can see the culture and daily life around you, beyond the usual tourist routes. We left feeling grateful for a comfortable stay and the memories. If you want hospitality along with a real cultural experience, Carpe Diem Nungwi is a great choice. 🫶

The front yard was such a cozy spot. We spent every evening there playing the games they had and drinking the coldest beer on Zanzibar. Haluk and his friend, who was visiting from Turkey, were around a lot. We talked with them and got great vacation tips. Cold water was free in the house, and breakfast was made to order, with nothing bad to say about it. We spent our first four days on Zanzibar at Carpe Diem and felt at home as soon as we stepped into the front yard. The rooms have big, comfortable beds and nice shelves for storage. The bathrooms are large and well used, but still in okay condition. It's centrally located in Nungwi, with the nearest beach an easy walk away. Kendwa beach is farther, but you can take a longer walk or a taxi for the amazing sunsets. Next time we're back in Zanzibar, we'd happily stay with Haluk again. I'd recommend Carpe diem hotel to anyone visiting who isn't after ultra luxury.

The rooms are spacious, quite nice, and clean, and the bathroom is similar. They're worth the price, except that the doors don't close very well and let in a lot of light. Paying 30K TZS for four days to use the equipped kitchen and fridge seemed more than fair. The neighborhood can be noisy, which made sleeping at night difficult. There's a stinky dump right outside the main entrance. The host was probably the rudest, least friendly and helpful person we've met in that kind of role. He never introduced himself or welcomed us. We approached him twice, first asking if it was a good time to ask questions or get tips and general information. At first he said he was busy, then gave us some impolite, really detached answers. We wondered if the host in the good reviews we'd read before booking was perhaps his better twin. Luckily there were two other girls. Nora (if we remember the name right), the taller one, was much nicer and more helpful.
