We loved our stay at the Max Hotel in Nungwi, and a big thanks to Katerina, the owner. After checking out, we went to Paje and weren't happy there. I messaged Katerina, and she made it possible for us to return and stay at the Max Hotel. We were so glad, and we'll definitely come back. The location is ideal, just a 3-5 minute walk from the beach. Restaurants and a souvenir shopping street are nearby, and there's an ATM at the end of the street. Prices are mostly in dollars, so change money into dollars or shillings. We could also pay by contactless credit card at almost every restaurant. The street outside the hotel is a bit dim, but it didn't bother us. A restaurant around the corner stayed open late and lit it up. Our room was spacious and clean, and breakfast was included, though we always slept until 11:00 and missed it, haha. The AC leaked once, but it was fixed within two minutes and the water was cleaned up right away. The toilet stopped working once too, and they fixed that quickly. Power went out briefly each day, which seemed normal in Africa and also happened at restaurants and the club. The hotel has a generator, so lights and water pressure came back quickly, though we sometimes had no electricity or AC. Keep your phone power bank charged. There was also a security guard at the door every evening. We appreciated that, since Maasai sometimes walk with you to your hotel, and I think the guard stopped them from coming inside.

For a budget stay, maybe one night is fine, but the shower water is salty, which felt very strange. I don't think that's common in Zanzibar. The other nine hotels we stayed at had fresh water on site. I'm sensitive to it, and got a skin rash from swimming in salt water and then showering in it too. If that doesn't bother you, it may be fine. The grounds are nice, the staff are lovely 🥰, and the breakfast was among the best we had in Africa. The location wasn't great. It's only three minutes from the beach and Nanasi, but the area is very noisy and smells awful outside the hotel.

It was easy to get around from Max Hotel, with the beach and local sights nearby. Back at the hotel, my room was clean and comfortable, and breakfast had a good range of choices. The staff were attentive and very friendly throughout my stay in Zanzibar. I had a wonderful time.

Thank you so much ❤️

The staff handled their work well, and the rooms were cleaned every day with fresh towels, which really matters in this climate. Ekaterina, the manager, was especially helpful with everyday questions and recommendations. I stayed from December 16, 2025, to December 25, 2025, and found the hotel a solid choice for its price if you just want a comfortable place to sleep without frills. It’s about five minutes from Nungwi Beach and the cafes nearby. The street is unpaved and can get muddy with puddles after rain, though that’s how much of Nungwi is right now, with paving mostly on the main roads. The hotel has sorted out the earlier saltwater problem, and now brings in fresh well water. Island power cuts can last a long time, but there’s a backup generator here. The room had air conditioning, a fan, a fridge, and a safe. Breakfast was included, with a fairly varied menu, and everything I tried was delicious. The grounds are small, with clothes dryers outside. Thanks for the hospitality.
