Hostel N1

I liked how clean the hostel was and the furniture felt new. You can pick a women-only room or a larger mixed room, and there’s a fridge plus reception service around the clock. The staff were friendly and funny, though it was hard to communicate because they spoke little English. Having the shower and toilet together in one room was a bit uncomfortable. A dishwasher in the kitchen would help too, since some guests leave food on the plates.

Getting around was easy: it’s an eight-minute walk from the train station and about twenty minutes to the center or beach. The beds were comfortable, the building seemed clean, and our double room had plenty of outlets. They also lend shower slippers if you ask. Staff seemed willing to help, and the signs about water use and turning off lights made it seem like they’re trying to be eco-friendly. Sound carries everywhere, whether it’s coming from a bathroom, hallway, or lobby. Two of the five showers had toilets inside, one of those combinations was broken, a toilet kept running, and the first bathroom door could lock you in. Cigarette smoke came in through the kitchen windows, and elsewhere the building smelled musty or moldy. We care most about a good night’s sleep and cleanliness, and Hostel No1 only delivered on one of those.

The price is fair, the beds are fine for it, and the hostel is close to major transport. The rooms were clean and the showers and washrooms seemed cleaned properly. Still, cheap rates don’t excuse treating customers without respect. I’d rather pay a little more for staff who take care of the place and its guests. The kitchen wasn’t kept clean, even though there was always something to do. I asked reception several times and got ignored, including about the clogged drain. My request to leave a window open for fresh air was also dismissed, despite mild weather and a room with twelve people and no clean air circulating. I don’t see a good reason to keep it shut. Air conditioning can also spread bacteria and illness when several people share a room. It would help if someone on staff spoke Russian and English, if possible, or if the receptionist had some basic training and could speak English. I’ve traveled in many countries and worked in a hostel myself. I also don’t think staff should be smoking or painting while there’s cleaning to do. The receptionist threw away my alcohol without asking. I understand alcohol isn’t allowed, but I wasn’t drinking it in the room and should have been warned first. I found another hostel because of the poor cleanliness and lack of respect. It’s okay for a few nights overall, but I wish I could say more.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and the room was really cheap. The kitchen was available, and I hope they add a more comfortable common area to spend time in. My friend got cold shower water, though mine was hot, so I hope that was a one-off.
