Colonial Residence

I booked through Airbnb for a work trip to Entebbe from 15-28 September 2019, clearly asking for two separate rooms for my colleague and me near the airport so we could limit travel time and costs. While we were already in transit, Claire told us at the last minute that construction meant the original place was unavailable. She offered somewhere about 8 km from the airport instead, which made getting around each day harder and more expensive. The driver Claire arranged asked us for extra money from day one. We worked every day from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and behaved respectfully during our stay. On our only day off, we visited Kampala. Around 9:00 PM, in a poorly lit, unsafe area near the residence, we were violently attacked and robbed. We were badly injured and needed stitches, seven for me and about 20 for my colleague. Our money and personal belongings were all stolen. When we got back injured and distressed, Claire didn’t help us get medical care or other support, and instead reacted with hostility. We had to leave three days before the reservation ended and received no refund. During the stay, we hadn’t asked for special services, but Claire repeatedly complained about living costs and asked us for more money. Later she accused us in a message of trying to get services for free, which was completely untrue. The whole experience was disappointing and stressful. The accommodation didn’t match what we’d agreed to, and the lack of help during a serious emergency was unacceptable. Future guests should clarify the terms in advance and be cautious.
