After we’d paid in full, Florence made my friend and me leave after a few days because Papaya was overbooked. She moved us to a hotel down the road. I’ve travelled a lot and had never run into this before, and it was a real inconvenience. I’m in Kampala every few months and now stay at Red Chilli hideaway, which has excellent facilities, a large pool and 6/7 acres of land, in a much better location in Kampala. I wouldn’t recommend Papaya holiday home. I don’t feel it can be trusted.

We’d booked for the whole day and paid for rooms so my sister, the bride, could get dressed there, but afterwards the landlady wouldn’t let us use them. My sister ended up getting dressed in the corridors. During the evening reception, while we were cutting the cake, the landlady switched off the lights and started chasing us, saying we were making noise for her visitors. It was such a disappointing and unprofessional experience.

The garden and its seating area were lovely, and the place is spacious, with six rooms for up to 12 people. The kitchen is fully equipped, and it was good value overall. But water, internet and electricity cuts happened often. Some mosquito nets had holes, so be careful which bed you sleep in.

I liked the quiet, peaceful stay and the fabulous library. The gardens were amazing, the rooms spacious, and the beds well made. Staff and breakfast were great. Since I was there for a short staycation, food had to be ordered à la carte. The TV didn’t work, and some door locks need checking because they don’t open and close properly.

Papaya feels friendly and family run, with welcoming staff and lots of peaceful space in the rooms, lounges and gardens. It’s a relaxing place. If you’re looking for a hotel bustling with people from all over the world, you may want to look elsewhere.
