Ikoro Restaurant is a handy place to eat near Nyakabande Airstrip, whether you’re heading out for a flight or back from a gorilla trek. We tried the matooke, grilled tilapia, and Rolex, and all were delicious. The portions are generous and the prices fair. There are nice hill views and a relaxed feel, with attentive, friendly staff. Fresh juices are worth trying, and they also do takeaways if you’re short on time. It’s a good spot to sit with friends or family for Ugandan dishes or something different.

Unless you’re set on seeing golden monkeys, I’d skip this place. We were the only guests, yet employees were cleaning with loud music at 10:00pm. The building was badly run down and had no charm; it looked as though it hadn’t had a fresh coat of paint since Idi Amin was in power. I can’t understand the positive reviews it got in the past. The six-hour drive from Buhoma on one of the worst maintained highways I’ve seen was already nerve-racking, and this hotel wasn’t worth it. It reminded me of the Bates Motel in Uganda.

The grounds are full of tropical plants, with lots of comfortable places to sit and beautiful artisan work in the wood and stone. The rooms are nice, and the staff are attentive and wonderful. It feels peaceful and a bit off the beaten path, yet Kisoro town center is really close. A must stay if you’re going on Gorilla Tours.

I didn’t stay overnight, but I came to pick up colleagues who had booked Ikoro. While I waited for them, James at reception and Josephine brightened my time and kept me smiling. I also liked the herbs and flowers the hotel planted around the grounds, which give it a serene feel.
