Travellers Rest Hotel

The place is a little run down, but the worst part was the neighbour blasting music for half the night.

We had a really tasty lunch here. The food was good, and the garden was spectacular. We were lucky enough to spot a huge group of fruit bats at the back of the garden. What an impressive surprise.

For the price, we found it pretty reasonable for what it is, though perhaps a little overpriced. That's supply and demand, I suppose. There aren't many choices in Kisoro unless you're staying at the ridiculously expensive Mount Gahinga Lodge for about 2k USD a night, so this seemed fair by comparison. We stayed for two nights and found the hotel comfortable. The rooms were clean, the shower was hot, and the WiFi worked around reception. It was slow, but it did work. For anyone travelling in Uganda, those two things usually make for a good place to stay. We didn't eat at the hotel. We walked about 100m to Gorilla Highlands cafe and Coffee Pot cafe instead. I'd recommend staying here.

The hallway display of original notebooks, photos and press clippings makes this a fascinating place for anyone interested in gorilla conservation and its early days. The Travellers Rest also has plenty of history and a central location. I liked its authentic feel, though the place seemed a little unloved, and our welcome could have been more polished. A few of us dropped by without a booking last week, and I expected better service given the location and history. Maybe we caught them on a bad day.
