The three of us, all over 60, stayed in one twin and one single room, and both were fine. The accommodation was good, and our hosts were welcoming. There’s a big garden and a cellar bar with a TV, though it may be unmanned until 3pm. We didn’t eat there in the evening, so can’t comment on the food. We went to Alston House; people say the Cumberland Arms is okay too, with better beer but, I think, a simpler menu. Breakfast at Lowbyer suited us as walkers, with all the usual things, though it doesn’t start until 8am, which might not suit everyone.

Janice and Jim made us feel very welcome when we stopped here for a night while travelling around the area. The home-cooked food was wonderful, and a hearty breakfast set us up for the day. We also enjoyed spending some time in the cosy bar. It has the feel of a country house, with a rich local history and plenty of room for the kids to run around. There are peaceful walks nearby, and the area is much quieter than the Lakes.

We keep choosing this place when we visit Alston because the owners make you feel like a valued guest. The rooms are roomy, clean and tidy, with good WiFi, a really comfortable bed and a powerful shower. Breakfast is tasty, with a good range of options to get you going for the day. Many thanks.

Alston is a lovely town surrounded by stunning countryside, and this house worked wonderfully for our group stay. The bedrooms were great, and we particularly liked the bar and lounge, as well as the really well-equipped kitchen. Jim and Janice are excellent hosts. Highly recommend!

The owners were so helpful and friendly, and breakfast was a really well-prepared traditional one. I slept very comfortably in the four-poster bed. This was an overnight stop on a recent motorcycling trip, in a beautiful old manor farmhouse that’s kept its historic charm and furnishings. The plumbing is very noisy, as you might expect in a house of this age. It’s only a short walk into Alston, past the steam railway just down the road. I’d like to come back and explore more of the area.
