The carvery food was really good and well priced, so I was happy at first. Then I asked about having a wedding there and left feeling very disappointed. I only wanted a basic package for around 50 people, but the manager/owner said the starting price was £11,000, with no cheaper package options, and wanted a £2,000 deposit. He spent a lot of the conversation talking about refurbishment costs, the new llights and other parts of the venue, which currently feels like a meat shell of a building. Asking for that deposit on an empty shell was shocking. He came across as desperate and pushy, and I didn't feel comfortable. This is already a stressful day to plan. I wasn't looking to buy shares in the business or fund the lights. I never even got to see the rooms. I'd stay clear, wouldn't go back or recommend it.

The staff were brilliant, friendly, welcoming and always ready to help. The room was clean and looked after, but very basic, with a broken bedside lamp and a cracked mirror. The low price does show in the quality. Breakfast at £15 per person felt excessive, so I'd skip it. We stayed one night at The Portland Hotel. For somewhere just to sleep, it does the job.

The staff were excellent and the service was exceptional when we stayed here before the Great North Run. The restaurant food was really, really nice too. The room could use a freshen up, though. There were thick spider webs in the shower, like rope, and the room had a bit of a musky smell.

The bar food was reasonably priced for the quality and portion size, and drinks were sensibly priced too. The staff were fantastic, friendly and helpful throughout our couple of nights at The Portland Hotel. Our room was clean and well maintained, but very basic and had a strong damp smell and feel. Parking cost £10 a night, which is a lot when free spaces are available nearby, and even after paying we couldn't get a spot when the pub was busy. Breakfast was poor, with very little choice and not worth £15 per person. We skipped it the second morning and found better, cheaper options close by. The inexpensive rooms, helpful staff and good value bar food are the main pluses, but the breakfast, parking and damp smell make the stay poor value overall.

The rooms are spacious and pleasant, and the beds are big and comfortable. Everything was nice and clean, though the sink sits a little close to the toilet. The shower leaked, but had strong pressure and was hot. The water was actually far too hot, so be careful. Our room was warm, and there’s no air conditioning. The deluxe rooms do come with tea and coffee, a kettle and a fridge. Parking is available, but it costs £10 overnight and a space isn't guaranteed. Breakfast was too expensive for us. The Portland is a nice enough place to rest for the night, and a good hotel for the price, with a few quirky little issues that could be improved.
