The hotel’s right in the middle of town, close to everything, and I’ve stayed here several times before. But after these last two nights, the lack of attention to detail has me wondering if I’ll come back. My early Sunday check-in was fine. The room itself was only okay: the bathroom radiator was coming away from the wall, the toilet sometimes wouldn’t flush, and the toilet roll holder kept slipping off its bracket. The basin was tarnished with something, so I cleaned it myself. The bed felt like a wooden board, and the TV remote didn’t work properly. The iron in the room wasn’t fit for use either. Reception brought up a larger steam iron, but that one didn’t work, so I had to make do before going to a funeral. I came down for the Sunday roast, advertised as lunch from c1849. The two-course meal cost £25.95. The soup looked like water with a little barley and leek, and came with an uncooked bread roll. I ordered lamb and asked for a Yorkshire pudding. The young waitress said she’d check, then the head waitress first said no, changed her mind, and asked her to check with the chef. It wasn’t a good response when I was paying for lunch. When the plate arrived, the Yorkshire pudding was smaller than the single roast potato. There were only a couple of carrots and parsnips, and the lamb was badly overcooked. There was no mint sauce or gravy until I asked. My pint of Diet Coke was completely flat. By 1:15 the restaurant was almost empty. I sent the meal back and was offered something else, but I didn’t want to order again. I took a photo and can send it or post it here. Rococo' is just around the corner, so I went there instead. Please go there, the food is delicious and the service is good. Breakfast the next morning had a poor selection for a hotel this size. I’m severely diabetic and asked for two plain poached eggs and sweeteners for my coffee. There were no sweeteners, and there never have been on my previous visits. The hotel isn’t meeting the food standards requirements for dietary needs. At 11:45 the next morning, I asked reception to call me a cab so I could be in Cullybecy before 1pm. The receptionist looked at me as if I’d offended her for asking. Later, the bar wouldn’t give me a glass of ice for my room. It’s a shame. Management needs to sort this out before I return.

The room was generous, the bed was really comfortable, and the bathroom had both a bath and a separate shower. Some parts of the hotel are a bit dated, but everything still feels right. Breakfast had a nice spread of hot and cold options. It’s my first visit, and the quaint boutique feel and attentive staff have already got me wanting to come back. I’d definitely recommend it.

The food was a mixed bag at our family Christmas meal. I really liked my fish and chips, and Dad’s roast beef was great. Nanny found a couple of bones in her salmon, though, and the mac and cheese didn’t agree with my wife. We waited about 45 minutes for the food, which wasn’t ideal. Dad and I enjoyed our meals, but the other half of the table had problems. I’d probably return, though it wouldn’t be my first choice in Ballymena.

Staff were brilliant and the food was great. The rooms feel a little dated, and there’s only one light in the middle above the bed, with no bedside lamp. That’s awkward when one of us wakes at 5am to read and the other wants to sleep longer. I’m heading out to buy a reading light for tonight.

We came in for dinner this evening. The waitress seated us and left the menus, then went to get our drinks and never returned. After nearly half an hour without even a glass of water, we left. We won’t be back.
