The attractive building, pleasant staff, and good breakfast all count in the hotel’s favour, but the noise and cleaning issues would make me look elsewhere if I had another event here. I stayed in Room 109 on March 7th for an event and wanted to like the place as much as I liked the event. On weekends, there can be late events downstairs. In my case, thumping music carried up clearly until about 12:30 AM, enough to recognize most of the tracks. I heard people in the corridor complaining that they hadn’t been warned when booking, and I hadn’t been told either. Another guest from my event was affected too, and we discussed how bad it was at breakfast. Surely the music event was planned in advance, so guests should have been told before paying. The old sash windows also let in a lot of street noise. Since my room was at the front, I could hear people spilling out onto the street. The bed wasn’t among the most comfortable I’ve had, and I’ve stayed in plenty of event hotels. I spotted a buildup of dust behind it when I dropped something, which made me question how thoroughly the rooms are cleaned. With this soundproofing, the place needs to decide whether it’s a hotel or a nightclub. It can’t really be both.

Lois checked us in and was so friendly and helpful, a lovely start to the stay. The hotel felt warm and welcoming, with a relaxed atmosphere, a nice bar, and a good location. Our room was a decent size with a great view, though facing the road and square meant some early morning noise. We had a fantastic time.

Saint Paul’s House was a beautiful venue with a great atmosphere for the event, and I’ll absolutely come back. It was a busy, probably stressful night, but the whole staff made my evening. Ryan led his team brilliantly and kept the customer experience strong. Ellie at reception was delightful, Abby was amazing behind the bar, and Ben in the kitchen was fantastic. They stayed positive and professional throughout. Ehsan was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Monique was so sweet, Cal lovely, Becky and Elly at the bar wonderful, and Yacer helpful and really polite. Levi and Dan at the doors were lovely guys too.

The pâté starter was nice, but the toast was rock hard and impossible to bite or cut, so we couldn’t eat it. The whole visit lacked a welcoming atmosphere. Our waiter seemed to need basic customer service training: he didn’t know which drinks came with the Sunday bottomless brunch, and they couldn’t offer a mocktail or other non-alcoholic option for someone who doesn’t drink. It took ages to get our drink orders. Nobody mentioned the two-hour limit until we were told with ten minutes left that it was nearly over, and there was no friendly offer of another drink. From 1:20 to 1:50, I tried to get the waiter’s attention for another drink. I also saw him make a gin rose, stir the syrup with a straw, lick it, then throw it away. He did use a fresh straw, but it was still vile to watch. We wanted dessert, but nobody asked, so we gave up and left, feeling like they didn’t care. They didn’t bring the bill either, so we had to pay at the bar.

The wine pairing was a highlight, and the tasting menu was excellent. A pianist played through the evening, which added a lovely feel to the room. We were also sent home with delicious homemade chocolates, a thoughtful extra. A fantastic Chef’s Table experience from beginning to end, unforgettable and highly recommended!
