We enjoyed staying here in previous years, so I’ve added stars for those visits. But in September, after my grandmother passed away, we had to cancel the Christmas booking she’d been looking forward to. The hotel kept our deposit and couldn’t let us put it toward a smaller set of rooms. I understand if that was the policy, but their reply was quite terse given the circumstances.

We had a good two-night stay, and the location in Bournemouth is convenient. I’d recommend it for the location, spa facilities and value, though the rooms could use some updating. We were in the lodge’s top floor. The building has just one very small lift, with room for about one person and a suitcase. Our room was spacious and had the basics for a pleasant stay, including air conditioning, but it looked different from the Hotels.com listing. There were marks on the walls that needed painting over, a cobweb in a corner and quite old-fashioned furniture. Breakfast, the restaurant, spa and pool are in the main building, and were all to a great standard. I’ve shared more detail on those in my review of the Connaught Hotel main building.

The breakfast was great, though the basic rooms could use an update.

The bed was very comfortable, and the assistant manager was great at his job. He was always working and looking after the guests.

The lodge is well past its use-by date, though it does bring to mind a once-upon-a-time Torque Hotel, just without Basil.
