The breakfast was good and the room was good too, but they really didn’t seem used to small children. Nobody could clearly explain the breakfast charge for children, and at first someone suggested our one year old might be charged the adult price. The bigger issue was the booking. We paid £190 for a suite for two adults and our children, aged 1 and 4, then found out on arrival they wanted another £40 for a cot and sofa bed. We pointed to their own email, which said children under 12 were free, and to the booking page that showed the room as suitable for four children. The manager dismissed us and said we had booked through booking.com before even checking, though we had phoned first and then booked on their own website at a premium. She eventually removed the charge, very reluctantly, saying she’d “do it for now and look into it.” Nobody mentioned it again, but the whole thing left us on edge, and I still check my card statements now and then in case they change their mind. On the plus side, they had one pristine high chair, presumably from lack of use. I wouldn’t recommend the place for families with children, though I think it could be good otherwise.

The food was delicious throughout all three days of our hotel stay, and the New Year's Eve dinner was especially outstanding. In the restaurant, Mr Vivek and the Spanish waiter whose name we didn’t get were so pleasant and friendly. They couldn’t do enough for us. Excellent service.

We raised the seating issue with reception the following day, and were told that manager Yusuf would call. No call came. When I rang again that evening, Claire told us we should stipulate next time that we wanted the Tudor. I reminded her that the tea is advertised as being there. She said there had been a large lunch sitting in the Tudor, but didn’t seem to understand how frustrating the seating and atmosphere had been. She gave that reason quickly and hung up. The service was poor, and they showed no interest in improving things. We had booked afternoon tea for two on 17th Jan at the Tudor restaurant, but were instead seated somewhere else, in a cramped area next to the bar. The setting felt completely mismatched, with none of the atmosphere you’d expect for afternoon tea.

For our mum’s 80th birthday, we booked a celebration afternoon tea as a present. We asked about dairy and sugar intolerances, but were told nothing could be changed. We then requested a more savoury option, though that still included cakes, and chose it because there was no other option for two of us. The savoury food was awful, greasy, cheap fish fingers served as a portion. There was nothing celebratory about eating it. A dreadful place, with no options for dietary intolerances.

My mum said the afternoon tea was nice, but the way she was treated took the shine off it. The food itself was fantastic, with freshly baked cakes, and she and her friends enjoyed it as a Christmas present from me. The arrival service was shocking. When I booked the Champagne afternoon tea, nobody told me Mum needed a reference number. Her name was on the expected guest list, but the manager made a scene at the table because she didn’t have the number. The group said people were staring, especially because the manager was hostile. She demanded that I be called, then kept interrupting while I tried to explain. I had to ask her to let me finish, as she was talking over me and suggesting I hadn’t booked the vouchers. She gave me the wrong reference to search for in my emails, so I couldn’t find the receipt at first. I offered to find the booking date on my bank statement, but she said that wouldn’t be enough. When I finally found the code, she didn’t apologise. It was poor leadership from a manager, particularly one representing Mary Green Manor.
