Mercure Brighton Seafront Hotel

We all felt very welcome, thanks to staff who were helpful throughout. The three-course dinner was excellent too. We booked this overnight stay as a surprise birthday gift for my partner and paid a little more for a balcony room with a sea view. The Grade II listed building has a lovely setting and plenty of character inside.

The room was quite dark much of the time because ours faced a courtyard and other rooms, so we had to keep the curtains shut. We also heard guests slamming doors. There wasn't much storage, and we ended up leaving our clothes on the floor. Still, for what we paid, it was a nice two-night stay, although we've had better hotels elsewhere. The bed was comfortable, the bedroom clean, and the lobby was beautifully decorated. Staff were friendly and welcoming, and the bar was a pleasant place for a drink. It's within easy walking distance of town, and we had a delicious breakfast at The Meeting Place Kitchen across the road.

The rooms were very clean, and there were tea and coffee facilities. They were small, though, and looked tired, especially the bathroom, which could use redecorating and an upgrade. The shower was powerful and there was always plenty of hot water. Breakfast had a nice mix of hot and cold choices, but the dining area needs updating and seemed unable to handle the number of guests when busy. The check-in area was nicely decorated, and the reception staff were helpful. The location was excellent, and having parking on site was a bonus. I'd visit again, perhaps paying extra for a nicer room. Mine disappointed me, and the frayed, stained corridor carpet put me off a little.

The staff were warm, attentive and friendly, and breakfast with a sea view was lovely. The whole place felt relaxing, with Brighton's seaside character all around. I had a wonderful stay and will come back. Mercure Brighton Seafront Hotel is in a grand Victorian landmark, with period details and a charming mews. It brings together Regency-era elegance and its seafront setting, and even the creaky floors added to the historic character.
