The dining room had no atmosphere at all. It felt flat, soulless and forgettable, and didn’t offer any warmth or character. The whole place seems out of touch. A pub that can’t accommodate the very ordinary combination of a family and a dog isn’t charming, traditional or quirky. We arrived with a child and a dog, and staff offered no practical help. There was no flexibility or useful alternative, just a dead end. People travel with children and dogs, often together, and a pub hoping to welcome families should be able to handle that. This was one of my most disappointing pub experiences, and I wouldn’t recommend it. There are much better options nearby. The White Hart is about 10 minutes down the road and understands what makes a good pub: a welcoming atmosphere and a fantastic menu. I wouldn’t waste my time here again. A simple family pub visit became awkward and disappointing. Not good enough by a long way.

The first night, I ate at the pub and enjoyed the food, which was good and reasonably priced. The open fire made it cosy. I found this place while looking for somewhere to stay when working in the Bristol area, and I’d definitely come back. The room was comfortable, with decent quality kettle, toaster and other bits. Having a good breakfast selection in the room meant I could help myself whenever I wanted instead of working around set times. The bed was very comfortable too. My only gripe was the bathroom, which was a little cramped for a taller person.

The meals were genuinely tasty, and the service was friendly and attentive, though the portions were very small for fairly high prices. We left the car for free in the pub car park while walking around the nuclear power station.

A lovely old inn at Oldham on Severn, just outside Thornbury in Gloucestershire. There’s good food, real ales, lovely ciders, a large beer garden and a car park. Dogs are very welcome.

It can be a bit difficult to reach, but it’s a lovely pub near the Severn estuary. The garden and food are nice, and dogs and children are partly welcome.
