We haven’t tried the food, though the Hilton has more restaurant and high tea options, and I imagine you can walk in for those. If you’re after a fancy hotel experience, the Hilton may suit you. For the room itself, I preferred the Cambridge Premiere Inn, especially when saving money. It cost significantly less on our last two visits and didn’t have these issues, apart from not having a phone to call downstairs. This time we chose the Hilton because it was cheaper. The Hilton was clean and comfortable enough, much like the newly opened Premier Inn. It has a large lounge, but it was empty, with no piano player or staff, so it didn’t feel like a space guests were meant to use. Maybe it was low season. We were staying as a couple, but there was only one pack of biscuits, no herbal or caffeine-free tea, and a chipped water glass. The hotel was barely half full, yet our room had a sloping wall that stopped the curtain from blocking the light, so sunrise disrupted our sleep. We tried calling housekeeping or the switchboard for extra blankets, but nobody answered, which seemed unusual even at low capacity. The two large pillows were so soft that you sank into the middle. These may sound like picky points, but they shaped my comparison with the Premier Inn.

The room was spacious enough for two and clean and tidy, but the toilets need renovating, especially the wall mounted flushing handles. I’d remove the bath as well and modernize the whole bathroom. The room lighting and switches need updating too, with a master on/off switch and an espresso machine added. We stayed two nights over Christmas Eve with my family, in two rooms. I don’t think this Hilton in Cambridge deserves five stars. As others have said, it needs renovation and its policies need updating. The first impression from the car park, up the escalator or stairs to reception, could be redesigned to feel more welcoming, warm and posh, and to live up to the Hilton brand. The lobby itself needs that treatment too. Front desk staff could be trained to make guests feel more welcome. More smiles would be a good start. Please also consider letting guests use Chromecast on the TVs, since we have Netflix, YouTube and Disney accounts now.

Sunday 11th January The hotel itself was excellent, and I liked the lounge and breakfast. The coffee from the hot drinks machine was only lukewarm, though. Also, the singers were loudly wailing their hearts out at 7:30 in the morning, which didn’t go down well with us. Music after breakfast is fine, but not first thing. It should be relaxing, low key and kept at the same volume.

We felt spoiled all weekend. Each morning someone showed us to our table and explained the buffet on the first day. Breakfast had all the choice you’d want and was good quality. The bar was comfortable, and the barman was friendly. Our room was clean, very quiet and had a lovely view of the old street buildings. We stayed two nights to meet friends and do some Christmas shopping. Having the car valet parked on arrival was a treat. The escalator up to reception felt luxurious and very Christmassy with all the decorations and lights, and we were given a free glass of prosecco while checking in. The location is fantastic for doing anything in Cambridge. It was a lovely weekend, and we’ll definitely return.

The rooms were spacious, the staff were very good and the location was great. Parking is pricey, but the concierge parking was worth it. I’d love to stay again.
