ABode Canterbury

The bed was so springy that even breathing seemed to make it bounce. We’d never slept on anything like it, more trampoline than bed, and the bathroom was tiny, with no place to hang things and towels tucked into a black bag in the wardrobe. We stayed two nights over the Valentine’s weekend at Abode, Canterbury. The location is central and handy for seeing the attractions in this small city, and the welcoming bar staff helped us choose from a big range of cocktails and wines. Our “Desirable” double was advertised as having “premium bedding,” though what that meant wasn’t clear. It’s a fairly nice hotel in a great spot, but don’t count on much sleep.

Louis at reception was charming and professional, and answered all our questions clearly, helping make our stay comfortable. I stayed two nights recently and really liked both the room and the location. The building has a stylish feel and the staff are smartly dressed and friendly. I’d happily stay again.

The food was fantastic and the staff were lovely, even though a heater never arrived when we asked for one. We tried a couple of rooms: one was freezing and had a cold shower, while the other stayed warmer but had wallpaper coming away from the wall. For the price, especially on a busy Saturday, it didn’t feel like good value. The hotel itself is lovely, but could use some care.

We’ll come back when visiting family nearby. The stay was pleasant, the staff were good, and the price was reasonable. We did go out for breakfast, though. The hotel has a quiet first-floor lounge, a bar and coffee lounge by the entrance, and a more upmarket bistro at the back. Our side room was clean and everything worked, with no real view but also no noise. It was neither small nor large. The location is excellent, on the main pedestrian shopping street and only two minutes from the Cathedral. We stayed three nights earlier this week. Getting to the hotel by car to unload is a bit awkward, but that’s understandable in a medieval town. Check-in staff were all friendly and helpful, and it cost only a little more than a budget hotel.
