The location was fantastic, and the room itself was lovely and warm with a very comfortable bed. But we came back around 11pm to find the shower had no hot water. Thankfully the bath did have hot water, so it wasn’t a complete failure. When we arrived, the receptionist barely looked at us and seemed to be hiding misery and disdain. The next morning I mentioned the shower to a different receptionist, who didn’t seem particularly bothered and just said, “Oh ok perfect I'll add that to the notes, thank you”. Nobody said they were sorry. I don’t blame the receptionists personally, since more than one seemed indifferent, which feels like a wider problem. I’d like to give four stars, but the palpable misery forced my hand. I can’t give two, either, because we didn’t raise the shower issue until we were leaving, so I don’t want to assume how they’d have handled it. We also didn’t want to move rooms at 11pm.

The building is old, so the room layouts are something to keep in mind, but our room was okay. Staff were great, friendly and helpful. It’s right in the middle of Chester, close to everything, and didn’t cost a lot. We didn’t eat at the hotel, but our friends said breakfast was very good. We’d read the reviews beforehand and were pleasantly surprised. We did see a guest being very rude, complaining that there was only one pair of slippers in the room and asking for compensation. She’ll probably post on social media and give the place zero marks, which is a shame. In my view, that wouldn’t be deserved based on what we experienced.

We stayed here as a stop on the way back from Scotland. The location was great, but everything else let us down. There were missing light bulbs, broken soap dispensers and hardly any plug sockets in the room. The soundproofing was poor too, with someone upstairs stomping around like an elephant. The bar wasn’t stocked and had no wine available. Ridiculous. Breakfast was scheduled for a set time, then we were left waiting more than 40 minutes. The coffee was absolutely disgusting and undrinkable.

When I first checked in, the room wasn’t ready, but the staff made up for it. They offered me complimentary Prosecco while I waited and moved my checkout from 11am to 2pm, which I really appreciated. Huge thanks to the people working on New Year’s Eve, they were fantastic. I had a wonderful stay and would absolutely come back.

The room was spacious, which was a plus, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was okay, but five tables still had plates on them, so it seemed a little short staffed that morning. The hotel’s location is great, though it feels tired and needs updating. We couldn’t turn off the heating, so the room was a bit warm for sleeping. The kettle and tea supplies were tucked away in the wardrobe, there were no USB charging points, and our toilet paper wasn’t replaced even though we’d asked for the room to be serviced. A friend gave us a weekend break through Buy a Gift. We’d planned to add another night, but at over £200 a night, I didn’t think it was worth it.
