Higher Buck

We only ate at the restaurant, so I can’t comment on the hotel. The steak sandwich and hot chocolate were both excellent, and the atmosphere was cozy. Service was very friendly, but there were only two staff members and they seemed overwhelmed during the busy Saturday lunch service. It was fully booked, so make sure you reserve. The restaurant is in the center of a very picturesque village. It’s lovely there, but if you sit outside, you’ll be right by the main road, where traffic passes fairly often on Saturday around midday.

We had a lovely overnight stop on the way home from Scotland, and would definitely stay at The Higher Buck again. We arrived late on a Saturday with our daughter and dogs, having not managed to eat. The pub and dining room had no free tables because we hadn’t booked, but we could have dinner outside our room with the dogs. The food was great, both the main courses and dessert. Our room was in the apartment next to the pub, and was very well appointed and comfortable. We sat at the front of the pub and enjoyed the village surroundings. The area seemed quite affluent, which put us at ease. Breakfast was in the pub, where the dogs were welcome too. They even got a sausage each, a lovely touch. I’d like to explore the area more sometime.

The fish platter was a highlight, and breakfast was excellent too, with great coffee and smoked salmon. We had a family gathering of 12 spanning generations, and everything was catered for beautifully. From the warm, friendly welcome to the lovely bedrooms, the whole stay felt personal and welcoming. The quality was high throughout. We couldn’t have asked for a better stay at the Higher Buck.

The beef roast was absolutely delicious, and the service was amazing. I went for dinner during a weekend away and accidentally left my hat behind. Rebecca, the kind lady there, shipped it to my house!
