The room was comfortable, clean, and great. The food was another matter. I’ve been here three times with my company, and each time the vegan food was either missing until we asked for it or poor quality. At this corporate event, plant-based food had been requested, but only vegetarian options were provided. A colleague and I had to specifically ask for vegan meals, and one employee suggested egg sandwiches, so there seems to be limited understanding of veganism. There was no oat milk either. Your chefs need training in plant-based cooking.

The room was lovely and quiet as we’d requested. The cleaner was excellent, always polite and happy to chat, and checked whether it was ok to clean while we were there for a family function. The staff member I spoke to was very helpful and sorted what we needed, including a baby cot and a cold fridge for the baby's milk and yoghurt. Breakfast service fell short of what we expected: there was just one woman walking around and everything was very slow. In the end, I got up and fetched a high chair myself.

The member price at this Holiday Inn used to stay the same whenever we came, and we’ve stayed here many times over the last two years. This weekend it was more than double what we normally pay. I understand there was a big Take That event in the city and prices get maximised, but more than twice the usual rate for a member was disappointing. We used to stay at the Premier Inn up the road, but got fed up with its dynamic pricing, where the same room never cost the same twice. Normally I’ve only had good things to say about this Holiday Inn.

A big shoutout to the hotel that hosts the chess. Booking for 14 to 20 adults, many with needs, can be stressful, but the service was amazingly good. Blake made the whole process seamless. I’ve captained my chess team in the national league for 24 years, and this was one of the smoothest weekends we’ve had. Well done.
