The room was clean and comfortable, with high ceilings, but small, dark, and badly in need of new carpets and redecorating. There was no air conditioning, only a fan in the single wardrobe, and I couldn't open the window because church bells chimed every 15 minutes. The coffee labels were impossible to read, whether decaf or proper. The hotel decor feels tired, and I wouldn't rate it four stars, more like two or three at best. Car park spaces are too small, and the corridor from the car park to reception feels unwelcoming, like a boiler room with a couple of plants. The large bar area was poorly stocked, with very few snacks. The website advertises a restaurant, but apparently it's only open when tours are staying. The location is very central.

I spent five weeks here while taking a training course nearby and had no issues with the hotel, apart from a couple of fire alarms that were probably guests trying to be clever in their rooms. The food and beverage team were terrific and always tried to meet people's requests. Special thanks to Nicki, Katie, Cain, Euan, Grace, the young girl whose name I can't remember, and the assistant F&B manager whose name has slipped my mind too. Sorry I didn't say goodbye this morning. There were so many people, and it felt overwhelming.

Dinner was delicious and cooked perfectly, and the team handled our last-minute group arrival so well. Sorry we overwhelmed you. You kept us updated on kitchen timings, which we really appreciated. Breakfast was fresh with plenty of choice, and the breakfast staff were lovely and engaging. My room was spotless and serviced daily. Check-in was easy and welcoming at the Darlington Mercure Hotel, and the room was clean and well maintained. Check-out was simple too, using the keycard deposit box. A really pleasant stay with amazing staff throughout. Well done to the whole team.

I stayed for one night and booked a double through Agoda, but was given a twin room. The staff were friendly and did manage to sort things out, though I think my booking got mixed up. I had also called a few days before to say flight cancellations meant I couldn't check in on the arrival day. The woman on the phone noted it, but the message apparently didn't reach the team, so I had to wait around after a long journey. Breakfast was great and included in my stay. It's a good hotel for the price, although outside noise at night is quite audible and the soundproofing doesn't feel up to modern standards.
