Room 21 is a tough one: it's up 37 stairs, and the wall adjoining room 22 is so thin I could hear people walking, talking and sneezing. Their alarm went off at 6:30am and was so loud beside my head that I thought it was a fire alarm. The room also sits over a busy street. Glad I brought earplugs. The sink is right beside the shower glass, so I kept knocking my elbow on it while brushing my teeth. And watch your head around the sharply sloping ceilings over the bathroom and bed. I'd do everything I could to avoid this room. The staff were friendly, though. The location is hard to beat. Pittencrieff park is just a few feet away, and Dunfermline Palace, the Abbey and Andrew Carnegie’s birthplace are all a short walk. The lobby is nice. The dining room is okay but has no atmosphere, and the terrace and glass dining room look over a car park. Food was good without being memorable. The steak, mushroom and onion panini was the best, and portions were huge.

Breakfast was delicious, and the young woman serving was warm and efficient. The room was spotless, cosy and very comfortable, with a bath, which was a nice extra. I was only here one night before work nearby. I arrived early in a terrible storm, and the friendly receptionist kept my bag for me. I could dry off in the bistro, where the food and coffee were excellent. Strong WiFi and excellent service, too.

The staff were welcoming, and breakfast was really enjoyable. Restaurant meals were tasty and affordable. In room 25, my single room, the bed was comfortable and there were enough sockets for my devices. It had a small TV facing the bed, though I didn't use it. Both the room and bathroom were warm, but not overheated as some reviews suggest. The hotel felt warm too, probably more so after coming in from the cold. Do note breakfast finishes at 9am and the restaurant shuts at 8pm, earlier than I'd prefer, though I'm not complaining. Also, the walk up from the train station is a big hill, which I hadn't realised beforehand. I'd definitely come back and stay here again.

I used to eat at the City Hotel often without any trouble, but after last night I don't trust it anymore. On 16/12/25, I ordered pasta from the gluten free menu after checking with staff. It clearly wasn't gluten free, because I started throwing up four hours later. I don't know if I'll return.

This is about the restaurant, not a hotel stay. I used to eat at the city hotel regularly a couple of years ago and was impressed enough to give it five stars. It has really gone downhill since then. I'd been looking forward to the bruschetta and Cajun chicken pasta I used to love, but both have disappeared from the menu. That left me struggling to choose. The chicken cesear salad I ordered was awful: hard, chewy chicken, just lettuce leaves, and hardly any sauce. For £11, I expected a bigger serving. I only avoided going home hungry because a family member offered me some of their fish. I don't know why the Cajun chicken pasta was removed. It was delicious and, as far as I knew, popular. I'd strongly suggest putting it back. I won't return unless it does.
