Dalry Guesthouse

We slept comfortably, and the staff were very friendly. Bus stops are only about a two-minute walk away, while the Royal Mile and city centre take around 20 minutes on foot. Our room was right next to the staff/owners’ room, though, and the walls were so thin that we could hear conversations going on through the night. That’s why we gave it three stars.

The location is a plus, close to Haymarket with bars and supermarkets nearby. We stayed one night and got by, but at a still fairly high price, the service didn’t feel worth it. The rooms are dated and look hastily put together, and the shared bathrooms are much like a hostel’s. Ours wasn’t very clean. They cover the basics, but little beyond that.

We were happy with what we got for the price, especially since we visited during Fringe and rooms elsewhere cost a fraction of the price. The hotel is basic, with no private bathrooms, and the interior is outdated. The carpets in both the room and hallway didn’t look especially clean. The beds were very comfortable, though, and it was easy to get here from the airport or into town.

For a very inexpensive place where I just needed a bed for the night, it did the job. I knew the bathroom was shared, but the overflowing bin wasn’t great. Most of the place seemed reasonably clean, yet I was alarmed to find large yellow stains all over the mattress, so in the heat I slept on top of the duvet. Breakfast was good: the dining room was very clean and there was a nice choice of toast, cereal and fruit. I don’t always want a cooked breakfast. I probably wouldn’t come back unless I needed a place for just one night.
