The room had a kettle, microwave and a switched-off fridge, but no tea-making facilities. I checked the bed and it seemed clean enough. After ringing the bell, there was a short wait before the door was opened and I was welcomed in. Then the dog smell, including dog piss, hit me so strongly I almost gasped. I needed the room, so I took the key and was shown in. After going out for the evening, I came back to bed after a few pints and a meal, only to endure about half an hour of dogs barking relentlessly elsewhere in the building. They eventually stopped and I slept. In the morning I took photos of the shower before and after using it. I'm not sure whether what I saw was a lot of dust or the result of moving the plughole blocker so the water would drain instead of welling up. Last week I stayed in a Folkestone hotel for £3 less, and it was totally fine and brilliant for the money. When I'm back next week, I'll return to that original place.

We urgently needed somewhere to stay because all the Premier Inns were full, so we found this place. A man opened the door wearing a dressing gown with his chest and stomach on show. Inside, there was a horrible wet dog smell, and the dogs were growling and barking. We were charged £70 even though the site listed £40. Our room had holes in the walls, dirty sheets, spoiled milk in the fridge, mould in the bathroom and a shower held on with a zip tie. At 5am, someone in another room woke us by loudly talking to themselves, then kept shouting until 9am, with nothing done about it. We left quickly because of what had happened overnight, and the wet dog smell was still strong as we went downstairs. The outside of the building is worn down and in poor condition. My friends and I were disgusted and wouldn't recommend it, even if you're desperate. Staying in the car would be better.

I've rarely booked somewhere like this, and only did it because I was in a bit of an emergency. The low price and rating should have been a warning. When the door opened, the person greeting me looked like Rab C Nesbitt's English cousin, grown in Middle Earth. Then came the putrid smell of urine and excrement, like a wave telling me to run. The carpets were threadbare everywhere, and the place looked shockingly filthy. In room 4, I got a key for a door I don't think even locked, and a clean towel about as thin as my hope of getting out alive without catching something. The carpet was filthy, covered in sock fluff or dark hairs, and I didn't want to check which. There was so much dust around the mattress frame it could be carbon dated, so it clearly hadn't been touched for a while. A used sink sponge and other things that shouldn't be there were in the drawers. There was a dusty microwave on the floor, cables that look ready to start a fire, and a TV with the volume locked at a level that barely covered your overnight crying and prayers to see your loved ones again. Room 5 argued with another room after midnight, the pillows seemed to date from 1855, and the bathroom door only shut with a slap because the handle had stopped working. I showered after 12 hours on the road, then wondered if I'd done myself lasting harm. If The Hills Have Eyes were a B&B, this would be it. I'm sorry, team, but this place needs to be shut down!

The phone line couldn't be reached, and the awful wet dog smell was obvious as soon as the front door opened. At least we were only staying for one night before a channel crossing. The room had lights that didn't all work, dirty sheets with hairs in the bed, holes in the wall and mould in the bathroom. We could hear the next room snoring. I'd rather have slept in the car.

Absolutely shocking excuse for a 'hotel'. It stank of dogs, the greasy carpets were worn out, and the beds were lumpy. Cables hanging out of the wall were a trip hazard and looked dangerous. The room was like a jumble sale, so I refused to stay, but they wouldn't refund me. Avoid like the plague.
