Humber Royal Hotel

The front-of-house team gave me a genuine welcome, the kind that can make a bigger impression than service at some luxury hotels. My room was immaculate and very spacious, with plenty of wardrobe and drawer space and even an ironing board, which is rare. The window looked out over a golf course, though I didn't spend long looking out on a dark winter afternoon. I bring my own USB charging points when I'm travelling, so their absence wasn't an issue for me. The food was very good, better than at some supposedly higher-rated places, and the nightly price was reasonable. The outside of the building looked quite unassuming at first, but the “don't judge a book by its cover” saying really applies here. There's also a very large car park, with what looked like a popular spot for driving instructors at the far end.

My room was mostly great and had a wonderful view, but it was far too warm without air conditioning. I also found the huge bed a little uncomfortable, and the table had a strip of edging missing that kept catching my clothes. With some attention to the furnishings and outside, I'd rate it higher. The first view from the car park is of a really run-down exterior, though things look much better once inside. The place was clean, the food decent, and the staff very helpful and polite.

The friendly, helpful staff were a real plus, and the bar and dining spaces looked modern and clean. The room was a different story: the bed was very hard, the toilet wasn't fixed to the wall and kept running, the extractor fan didn't work, and there was a lot of mould on the bathroom ceiling that looked as if it had been wiped. Outside, the building looked derelict, with boarded-up windows and broken glass around the smoking area. I wouldn't call this a four-star hotel. Maybe a two, or a three at a push.

Inside, the rooms are clean and comfortable, the staff are friendly and the food is okay. The exterior doesn't give the right impression, so don't be put off by how it looks outside.
