Dinner at the restaurant was really tasty, with huge portions for a good price. My room was clean and roomy, and had tea and coffee making facilities. The staff were friendly and helpful too. I was very happy with my stay and would gladly return.

The food was excellent and there’s a varied menu. Staff were so friendly, and happy to suggest places to visit along the nearby coast. The rooms felt fresh, clean and comfortable, despite Hotel Mariners being 400 years old. It was lovely chatting with some of the regulars too. I WILL be back.

The Christmas pudding was lovely, but the rest of the meal was a letdown. The sprouts were soggy and seemed frozen, and the stuffing and gravy tasted like they came from packets. Everything else was bland, too. The plates and serving dishes were only lukewarm, and the food had gone cold by the time everyone was served. The table looked beautiful and service was okay, though a little slow. I’d have been very unhappy if I’d booked and paid for guests.

Breakfast was a highlight, with cereals and pastries available and a waiter asking what we wanted cooked. Our twin room was at the top of the building, quiet and comfortable, with a good bed and en-suite. Reception was okay, but we couldn’t get information about places to eat after 10pm in the area. The car park is small, though we were lucky enough to get the last space.

The rooms were clean and comfortable, and both breakfast and the piping hot evening meals were very good, with generous servings. Staff were efficient and friendly, and the beer garden was a pleasant place to sit. This is an old building, so the floorboards creak on every level, but that didn’t bother us. The steep stairs and lack of a lift could be difficult for anyone with mobility problems. Otherwise, it’s a great hotel and I’d happily recommend it.
