We came for two nights to be near family. The rooms were basic but warm and clean, the beds comfortable, and tea, coffee and shower gel were provided. The hilltop setting gives brilliant views, though I was glad it didn’t snow. We had paid in advance, but were asked to hand over a credit card so they could hold £100 for extras and the state of the room. I said we’d pay for anything we used. Reception was empty when we arrived, and someone eventually came after we rang the bell. After a tiring journey we tried to eat at the bar restaurant, but it was empty and nobody came when we rang. Another couple rang too; eventually the young woman covering reception came to serve us. There were only four diners. We both ordered medium steaks. The other couple’s meal came out with ours, and neither couple could eat their food. Both meals were sent back. The other couple went to find a shop for food. Our steak was overcooked and rock hard, the mushrooms were black and hard as if cooked again, and the chips tasted of old oil. Breakfast the next morning was covered by another young woman doing reception and waiting tables. There was a good choice of juice, cereal, pastries and a full English, but the mushroom on my plate was the same rock-hard black one from the night before. The bacon was too hard to cut and seemed reheated. The poached egg, black pudding and tomato were fine. The young women were doing their best and it wasn’t their fault; we felt bad telling them. They seemed to be running every department and deserve a medal. I’d stay again because it’s good value, but I wouldn’t eat there, apart from continental breakfast. I think it may be part of Adnans group, and they should look at staffing rather than having young women do everything.

The staff were lovely, the service was good, and the location is pretty. Dinner was a pleasant surprise and better than our already low expectations. The rest needs a lot of attention. Our room was freezing and there didn’t seem to be a way to warm it up. The hotel felt run down and a bit grotty. It wasn’t especially unclean, though we did find a few stray hairs on the sheets; it mostly needs care throughout. Breakfast was appalling: cereal, croissants, toast and yoghurt, with no cheese, meat or fresh fruit.

The views are amazing and make a visit worthwhile. The rooms were OK, and the staff were kind and wanted to help. Breakfast was hard to chew. The bar lighting is very bright and cold, like a 1990s working men’s club, almost as if there were roadworks going on inside. This place has the makings of a great venue, and has probably hosted many happy weddings and birthday parties, but it needs a little care. Bring sunglasses and zinc if you’re going to the bar.

The beds were comfortable and the view was astounding, with plenty of real Pennine wind. It’s quite an old-fashioned hotel, from the plumbing to the electrical fittings. Reception staff let it down: the young woman on duty in the evening and the one in the morning were professional but not especially welcoming. The night porter was particularly nice, though. At 2am I couldn’t open the bathroom door, and he sorted it quickly. The handle was circular, badly placed and very stiff, with nothing to grip, but he was strong enough to get it open.

We went for the three-course meal today. The food was absolutely delicious, service was brilliant, and the location was gorgeous. We’ll definitely go again. I also noticed the Christmas dinner was 49.95, so we might book that.
