Lunch at The Castle in Saltwood with the girls was such a nice time. The pub feels warm and friendly, and it’s lovely to see it busy again with the new landlady. We all enjoyed the proper pub food and left happy. We’ll be back.

I stopped in a few times lately for the changing real ales, which have been in excellent condition. On a soggy Saturday I just wanted a snack, and ended up having the best chunky chips I’ve ever tasted. I’m usually a skinny fries person, but these were double fried, crisp outside and fluffy in the middle. The homemade bread pudding was amazing too. Definitely heading back for Sunday lunch before Christmas.

The owner and staff are lovely, friendly and easy to talk to, a big change from the previous ones. I really want this prime spot to work as a good village pub, so I’m going to keep supporting it. Sadly, our Sunday lunch last week fell short. The food was only slightly warm, the beef was chewy, the vegetables were mushy from overcooking, and the wine wasn’t up to standard. It was only a few things, and I don’t like complaining, but feedback matters. I think they have the experience and energy to put it right, and the pub could become a fantastic place and venue.

At 7:25 pm on Sunday 21st Dec, I went over for a drink with my daughter and son-in-law. We were told they were closing at 7:30, but could be served if we finished our drinks in five minutes. There were already several other customers there who clearly wouldn’t be done by closing time. I’ve never felt so unwelcome in a pub. I’m extremely disappointed and won’t be back. If this is how the new owners hope to attract business, I fear for The Castle’s future.

It’s great to see our village pub brought to life and made what it should have been. Under the new owners, there’s a wide choice of drinks, tasty food and Sunday roasts, plus lots of events. The bar service is fantastic too. Thanks!
