The food I had was gorgeous, though there are only six to eight meal choices, while the drinks list runs to about four pages. The location is beautiful, but in my opinion the Clansman could be a really lovely little hotel if it were run properly. After staying three nights in February, I found the website misleading. There are no staff at all from about 11:30 until around 7, and if something goes wrong in that time, as it did for me, you’re on your own. The hotel doors are locked from about 11, too, so arriving later means finding the “hotel” locked. With no overnight reception, I don’t think it should call itself a hotel or a three-star place. Some staff were extremely helpful and pleasant, while others were disrespectful and a bit rude. The manager didn’t seem to know the hotel’s rating. It’s also not really suitable for people arriving by bus, since you have to cross a busy road. The manager suggested taking a taxi, but the prices would make Glasgow black cabs look reasonable. Maybe I expect too much, but I’m from Glasgow, where, in my opinion, we do things a bit better.

The food was the best we had on our trip, and the drinks were phenomenal too. The staff were kind and attentive, and our room was clean and comfortable, with warm towels and gorgeous views from the windows. The building is a bit old, but it’s very well kept and that adds to its charm. They also gave us a “loch ness passport” with buy-one-get-one tickets for the cruise, which was amazing, plus whiskey tours and the Loch Ness center. A wonderful place to stay in the area. We’d definitely come back and recommend it.

The view of Loch Ness from our bedroom and the breakfast table each day is something I’ll always cherish. We had all our breakfasts and evening meals in the restaurant, where both the food and service were exceptional. They had amazing choices for people eating gluten free, and every staff member was wonderful. Storm Amy unfortunately ruined the day for everyone, but the hotel helped us get booked into another hotel for the night. I booked from 4th to 11th October, and we had an absolutely amazing experience. A big thank you to everyone who helped us. Some people just can’t be happy with anything when they write reviews.

We still talk about how perfect the stay was, more than a year later. Breakfast by the window looking over Loch Ness was hard to beat, and the food was great. The service was so friendly. We also had a relaxing evening on the couches by the bar, trying some of their scotch and Magners on tap, our favourite. Anyone planning a trip to Scotland needs to stay here!

I live in South Africa and paid six months in advance. After driving all the way from Windermere, we arrived to find the hotel closed. Bookings.com didn’t care. While we waited in the restaurant, the unprofessional receptionist, Claire, didn’t know what to do or say, apart from telling the bar staff she’d need a drink tonight. A couple of hours later, the manager Adam McMaster called to apologise and admitted he’d forgotten to tell me they would be closed. Not a word in the six months since I paid. We then had to scramble to find a hotel, which was difficult at the time and caused us a huge inconvenience. There was no follow-up, compensation, or invitation to come back another time. My partner and I had wanted to stay at this hotel for years, but that obviously won’t happen now. Very disappointing.
