Emily and Brandon were a breath of fresh air on our recent visit. Emily welcomed us warmly and was enthusiastic and responsive to our questions and requests. Brandon kept moving around the restaurant to check whether tables needed anything. It was a big change from the wait staff usually clustering in a corner with their backs to diners, chatting and laughing. My family and I have been dining at Milsoms Kesgrave Hall for years for the fantastic food, lovely setting and calm atmosphere, even though service had often been less than desirable. The Asian-fusion menu is always a pleasure, and the food has never let me down. The menu curators and chefs just don’t get it wrong. I’d strongly recommend the soft-shell crab if it’s still available, and the panfried stonebass.

We’ve stayed overnight four times and had a few small problems before, but tonight’s restaurant service was dreadful, even though the food was amazing. It felt like people got better service if they were the right sort, and we weren’t. Other diners heard about the specials and recommendations, but we didn’t. After our main course, we said yes when asked if we wanted the dessert menu, then waited 15 minutes and had to ask for it. We ordered desserts, coffee and after-dinner drinks to go with them. The desserts arrived, but after half an hour waiting for the drinks, we gave up. The Manager smiled throughout our complaint and said sorry, but didn’t seem to care. We’d planned to return with friends in summer, but we’ll go somewhere else.

The kitchen is open, so you can hear the chefs working while you chat and wait. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, though I thought the restaurant could use a little more light. My partner and I went a few days ago for her birthday, and the staff were very polite. We shared a platter to start, and the chilli honey drizzle gave the food a surprising mix of flavour and life. She enjoyed her juicy, well-cooked burger. My sirloin was cooked well, soft and juicy inside with a nice crisp outside, though it wasn’t as blue as I’d have liked. The chips were great, and the garlic sauce with the steak was beautiful. My only gripe was one waitress constantly clicking her pen, though I guess that’s more my issue.

We booked for Boxing Day and it wasn’t the best, especially compared with la talbooth, where we normally go. Nobody took our coats or showed us to our seats, and the food wasn’t special. Two of the roast beef mains were running with blood and we couldn’t eat them. The desserts weren’t anything special either. We complained to the main man, who took something off the bill, but honestly not enough, especially for a special birthday. The staff were good, but everything else let it down. We won’t be rushing back.

The new Gatehouse Deluxe Rooms made a great impression: modern, spacious and full of thoughtful touches, including lovely Elemis products. I did have to hunt for the towels after my shower, then spotted them tucked under the sink in the picture. The grounds and hotel are beautifully maintained, and every staff member was lovely, friendly and helpful, even at midnight. I stayed just one night on business after a late finish at an awards event. Breakfast the next morning was excellent, with a great selection and attentive service. A wonderful stay, and I’ll be back with my husband for a weekend.
