The chicken club sandwiches were a lovely surprise: generous portions and good value with the fries and coleslaw. We stopped at the Shakespeare for a quick lunch while spending an afternoon in Kendal. The service was prompt, friendly and efficient. It was one of the best parts of our weekend break.

Vicky, the lovely Manager, gave us wonderful customer service and made us feel welcome. I especially liked that she remembered to get the dog a drink and a treat as well. We'll definitely come back.

The food was the highlight. Everything was homemade, full of flavour and well priced. I had the beef burger pie with beef dripping cooked chips, and it was one of the tastiest things I've eaten in ages. Proper comfort food. The ale was poured perfectly too. The Shakespeare was clean, looked great and felt really welcoming. The staff were friendly and helpful as soon as we arrived. A brilliant visit, and we'll be back if we're in Kendal.

The pub was nice, and the staff were lovely. But breakfast was terrible: a continental breakfast in a bag, eaten in your room. The website didn't actually say it was continental, and I wouldn't have booked if I'd known. Eating Weetabix on the end of the bed felt more like staying in a hostel, with nowhere proper to sit. The room also felt a bit damp.

At last, I've found a proper pub in a lovely town. The welcome from the lovely staff was so warm, the beer was excellent, and the service was second to none. Just perfect.
