The venue itself is nice, but the afternoon tea was poor value and a real disappointment during our trip. The sweet treats seemed low quality, the sandwich was dry and unpleasant, and the jam tasted off. The atmosphere felt awkward and unfriendly, and the service fell short. The children's tea looked just like the adults' despite costing much less, and we found it just as disappointing. I can only speak to what arrived at our table and how it tasted to us. The desserts may have been homemade, but at this price they came across like cheap shop-bought items. I also think afternoon tea should include more than a single sandwich option and a sausage roll. Other reviews have described bland sandwiches and limited choice, or dry sandwiches and cream from a squirty can rather than fresh cream. We wouldn't return. We were also concerned by the owner's public reply, which we found unprofessional, and by the dismissive way criticism seemed to be handled instead of being used to improve.

The setting was beautiful, comfortable, and relaxed, with lovely people and great service. My husband and I were warmly welcomed, then served a warm mushroom patty, a mini prawn cocktail, and a salmon sandwich. The scones came with lashings of clotted cream and jam, followed by delicious sweet treats, and there was plenty of tea and coffee. We've tried afternoon tea in several places, and this was our favourite for both the food and the location. Just perfect.

We came between Christmas and New Year and loved the quiet moments when the other guests had gone out for the day. We happily pretended the whole castle was ours. And those Christmas decorations! Someone clearly has a great eye for detail. We only came for afternoon tea but stayed three nights. Wendy and the team went above and beyond to make it special, and nothing seemed too much or too little trouble. So, just book it. I can't agree with the nitpicking reviews. We felt very lucky to have such a magical stay.

A delicious three-course dinner and full English breakfast were part of a lovely stay through Brit Stops. Every dish was excellent. The hosts were welcoming and attentive, and made me feel right at home. Fantastic service.
