Sunday roast was a real treat, and we loved the wine list too. We stayed for seven days and found enough variety to enjoy at least one meal a day without getting bored. We’re not breakfast people, so it was lovely to take coffee back to our room, with a great choice of teas and coffees. The team were wonderful, especially Jean at the front desk, who helped organize things and looked after this needy New Yorker. The place felt clean, fresh and cheerful, with the atmosphere of an 800-year-old pub. It sits right in the centre of Market Harborough, a five-minute walk from churches on either side. Snow made the visit feel even more romantic, and I can’t wait to return. At 800 years old, it’s a perfect base in town. The beds are great, the bathrooms fabulous and the Wi-Fi works well. If I were planning a wedding or celebration, I’d have it at the 3 Swans, in the lovely ballroom behind the hotel. It’s private, open and practical for dancing or a convention, with a great team to help with everything from lighting to the full design.

We were so pleased with the stay that we’ve booked to come back in two weeks for my birthday, this time at another Coaching Inn Group hotel in Warwick. The beef stew with Stilton and herb dumplings is especially worth trying. We’ve visited this hotel several times and it keeps getting better. We booked a room with dinner and breakfast, and every part went smoothly. They let us check in early without any fuss and made us feel welcome. The room, drinks and meals were all enjoyable, the staff were attentive, guest services were great and the food was very good. Not a single part of our stay stood out as a fault.

The dining and breakfast rooms were a bit chilly. Could they turn up the heating? Otherwise, our night in a deluxe room was a very good stay, with a smashing room, a lovely dinner, and a nice house champagne at a fair price. There was a good choice on the menu, and we’ve already booked another visit.

The price was about average, and it wasn’t a terrible meal, but I wouldn’t recommend coming back for Sunday roast. It felt like they served one because it was Sunday, rather than because they cared about the quality. The roast didn’t live up to the photos or reviews online. Maybe it’s just the roast that’s disappointing. I might try the regular menu sometime, but I’d be going in sceptically. The food is my concern here, though the review system only lets me rate the hotel and rooms. When we arrived, a staff member just nodded. There were no signs to explain where to go, so we picked up menus and found a table without knowing if we were meant to seat ourselves. The roast was below average. The gravy seemed to be from a powder mix, the potatoes weren’t warm or even a little crisp, and the vegetables were basic. The cauliflower was waterlogged with some gratinated cheese on top, not what I’d call cauliflower cheese. The meat was a fair portion but overcooked and poor quality. The Yorkshire pudding was too dark and soft, and the apple sauce tasted like a cheap shop-bought one. When I asked for the dessert menu, the man said, “Err, they are on a table by the front door,” then walked off. The crockery felt too fancy for the food: money on the plates, but not on the ingredients, cooking or staff training.

We stayed in room 105, a Deluxe Double in the conference building. The Juliet balcony was handy for letting in fresh air, and the room was clean with new, good-quality furnishings. There’s plenty of storage for a few days, plus two chairs and a table with cards and dominoes if you fancy a game. The bed was firm but comfortable, and having both a thin and thick pillow was a nice option. The bathroom was spacious, with plenty of shelf room for toiletries. The bedside sockets are USB-A and USB-C, so you just need your cable, and the light controls are by the bed. The only drawback was noise from parties downstairs and people outside. It all quietened at midnight when the music stopped and the last few noisy guests moved on.
