We only stopped in for a drink after finding the place nearby. The bar was relaxed, with a friendly atmosphere, and we enjoyed chatting with two couples who told us some of its history. It’s dog friendly too. Loved the visit.

The staff were lovely, quick and attentive, and knew the menu well. There was a mix-up with one dessert, but my niece still enjoyed it. Parking was plentiful and access was reasonably easy, especially with no wedding on. We were a group of 15 for a family birthday dinner and had a cosy private area at the back, away from the bustle of a wedding. Getting between the restaurant and the garden meant pushing through wedding guests gathered along the main walkway, which wasn’t ideal. Some of the other meals looked great and seemed worth the price, including the katsu chicken, burger and chicken skewers. My lasagne portion felt more like a child’s, though, and my partner’s mixed grill was only okay: the chicken was halved and the gammon oddly cut into squares. The food quality was alright to me, but the prices felt a little high for it.

The building and location are beautiful, and breakfast was generous with an excellent chef. The bar staff member was fantastic too, and the breakfast waitress couldn’t have been more helpful. The receptionist, by contrast, seemed bored and didn’t smile or make us feel welcome. Our room was tired, with a bathroom that looked dirty and had lots of black mould. There was no hot water. The lighting was dim, the Wi-Fi barely worked, and its login system seemed to collect a lot of personal data. Neither of our phones, on O2 and Three, got a signal. Despite the desk, it wasn’t usable for work. The toiletries were just a cheap all-in-one soap in a plastic tube, so you may want to bring your own shampoo, conditioner and hand soap.

We had lunch in the bar, where both the food and service were faultless. The hotel is made up of wonderful old buildings dating back to the 13th century, with historical links to the Knights Templar and its own church connected to the hotel. I’d happily recommend it.
